Latest Club News 19th February 2021
Our wonderful centre turned 44 years old today! Happy BIRTHDAY to all of us!
It was the new Facebook profile page which alerted us, as we received some lovely birthday messages! Our ‘birthday’ is 19th February 1977, when we opened the doors for the very first time thanks to those with the vision! How many of you can remember that day? If you have any memories of the “good old’ days” you’d like to share we’d love to hear from you.
Those lucky enough to be here on this auspicious day got to celebrate with some mini-cupcakes, sing the birthday song and blow out a candle too!
What an amazing job our reception volunteers are doing! Not only to meet and greet our members with smiles & the odd joke, but also general office duties. They have also been implementing new systems to make our check-in process much easier, especially with our larger groups like Rock'n'Roll dancing Wednesdays and New Vogue plus Line dancing Thursdays.
Please continue to show them the love to ensure they know they are invaluable to the centre.
A HUGE thank you so much to ALL of you who make such a positive difference to our centre, we really could not do this without you!
Changes to some Dance sessions
The New Vogue dance sessions will be changing format in March:
The LAST Tuesday New Vogue Sequence dance night will be Tuesday 23rd February to make way for some new opportunities…
Thank you so much to Colin & Elizabeth for holding the fort and putting the music on for our dancers in the past month. You have been an amazing support of all our dance nights, and we look forward to continuing to support your Saturday nights alternating with Patti & Tony.
The last Thursday morning session with Patti will be Thursday 25th February, after that the wonderful Brian will continue on catering to the dancers as per usual every Thursday!
There will be a NEW session TUESDAY AFTERNOONS – 1pm Revision session with qualified tutors Dianne & Ken followed by dance practice to Patti’s live music 1.30-3.30pm. This is a special introduction for March only and will be only $2 per member for the month.
There are now Expressions of Interest forms on the noticeboard for both the Tuesday nights and Friday nights. Rock'n'Roll social dance night is proposed for the Tuesday nights with Anne Swift. Friday nights are up for grabs for any other style you wish to see in the club – perhaps some Cuban-flavoured dance style with Christina if there is enough interest? Please put your names down as these classes won’t be able to start without your names on the list. Perhaps you would like to see some different things altogether on the Friday nights? We want to hear from YOU and your preferences.
New Activity Starting
We are so happy to have a Needlework, Patchwork & Quilting group to start Fridays 8.15am-12.15pm from 26th February! The lovely Karen Lockhart will lead this group, and happy to welcome anyone who wants to have a yarn whilst working on your favourite crafty project. This is not a teaching group, it will be more social and for people to sew, knit, crochet, quilt, or whatever else takes your fancy.
Name Change – HAVE YOUR SAY!
Some members have been confused as to why the centre’s name was changed from Coolangatta Senior Citizens Centre to Cooly Rec Club without consultation, so we have put out a survey of the name change to gauge who prefers the former name and who prefers the new. This is our attempt to engage all of you, our members, in any decision we make about the club. These forms are at the reception desk and will be distributed in your activity. We would love to hear from you before Friday 5th March before the committee make any decision. Please be proactive and fill out the form, which will also be emailed out to those members on our email list.
Vale Ted Marchwicki
Super sad news when we heard one of our Centenarians Ted passed away last week. Ted was celebrated along with Billy Blue Shoes at a Thursday morning dance in November 2020 when they both turned 100 within weeks of each other. We send our deepest condolences to Ted’s family and close friends at this difficult time. We know he will be giving us his cheeky smile every now again, and some encouraging nudges in the Table Tennis group no doubt!
Until next time, keep happy, keep healthy, keep your sense of humour, and remember why you decided to join the club in the first place! It will be a good reminder when some days seem challenging. Behind every cloud is a silver lining!
We are in this together…
